TASTE NEWS-"15 Brilliant Uses for Toothpaste"

Toothpaste: it whitens, brightens, deodorizes, removes stains, and restores and protects enamel. But toothpaste's cleaning capabilities work wonders on many things besides our teeth. The same ingredients that help polish our pearly whites
can also soothe some common ailments, make household items sparkle, and even get rid of stains and pungent smells. Try out these fifteen tricks with a white, non-gel toothpaste (unless otherwise noted), and watch that cavity-fighting, breath-freshening tube of wonder work its magic.

1. Relieve irritation from bug bites, sores, and blisters: These skin irritations all tend to weep and, in the case of bug bites, often itch. Apply a drop of toothpaste to a bug bite or insect sting to stop the itching and decrease any swelling. When applied to sores or blisters, it dries them up, thus allowing the wound to heal faster. It's best when used overnight.

2. Soothe a stinging burn: For minor burns that donot involve an open wound, toothpaste can deliver temporary cooling relief. Apply it delicately to the affected area immediately after a burn develops; it temporarily relieves the sting and prevents the wound from weeping or opening.

3. Decrease the size of a facial blemish: Want to speed up the healing of a zit? Apply a tiny dot of toothpaste to the affected area at night before bed. Wash it off in the morning.

4. Clean up your fingernails: Our teeth are made of enamel, and toothpaste is good for them, so it stands to reason that toothpaste would also be good for our fingernails. For cleaner, shinier, and stronger nails, simply scrub the underneath and tops of fingernails with a toothbrush and toothpaste.

5. Keep hair in place: Gel toothpastes contain the same water-soluble polymers that many hair gels are made of. If you are looking to style and hold an extreme hair creation, try gel toothpaste as your go-to product if you are out of regular hair gel. (This is also a great trick for making baby barrettes stay in place.)

6. Scrub away stinky smells: Garlic, fish, onion, and other pungent foods can permeate the skin cells on our hands. Scrubbing hands and fingertips briefly with toothpaste removes all traces of smelly odors.

7. Remove stains: Toothpaste can make tough stains on both clothing and carpets disappear. For clothes, apply toothpaste directly to the stain and rub briskly until the spot is gone, then wash as usual. (Note that using a whitening toothpaste on colors can sometimes bleach the fabric.) For carpet stains, apply toothpaste to the stain and scrub it with an abrasive brush, then rinse immediately.

8. Spruce up dirty shoes: This tactic works great on running shoes or scuffed-up leather shoes. As with carpet stains, apply toothpaste directly to the dirty or scuffed area, then scrub with a brush and wipe clean.

9. Remove crayon stains on painted walls: Rub a damp cloth with toothpaste gently on the marked-up wall and watch the Crayola marks disappear.

10. Make silver jewelry and other silver pieces sparkle: Rub toothpaste onto jewelry and leave overnight. Wipe clean with a soft cloth in the morning. Make diamonds shine by giving them a gentle scrub using a toothbrush, toothpaste, and a little water. Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of toothpaste. Do not use this method on pearls, as it will damage their finish.

11. Remove scratches on DVDs and CDs. This remedy has been used with mixed success rates, but it seems to work fairly well on shallow scratches and smudges. Apply a thin coating of toothpaste to the disc and rub gently, then rinse clean.

12. Tidy up piano keys before tickling them: Piano keys retain oil from the skin, which then attracts dust and dirt. Clean away grime gently with a damp, lint-free cloth and toothpaste; after rubbing in the toothpaste, wipe the keys clean with a second lint-free cloth.

13. Deodorize baby bottles: If baby bottles develop a sour-milk smell, a good cleaning with some toothpaste and a bottle scrubber will clean away residue and deodorize. Always make sure to rinse well.

14. Remove the burned crust on irons: For those of you who still use an iron, you may find that after time, the plate of the iron develops a burned crust. The silica in toothpaste gently grinds away this rusty-looking layer.

15. Defog goggles: Scuba divers, swimmers, and triathletes may already know about this handy little trick: Rub a small spot of toothpaste into each lens of your goggles, then rinse thoroughly, and voila! There'll be no need to ever buy expensive defogger gels again. Avoid rubbing too vigorously, though, as the abrasive ingredients in toothpaste could scratch the lenses.

TASTE NEWS-Enjoy oranges for good health

Enjoy oranges for good health

Instead of an apple a day, consider an orange a day for good health. Oranges, from fruit to juice, has been a favorite fruit for a long time. Experts say that oranges, grapefruit and other similar fruits have some of the healthiest properties of all of the foods. Oranges have long been considered by nutritional specialists to be among the healthiest foods around.
Health Aspects of Oranges
Oranges are extremely rich in vitamin C as sell as several other compounds that prevent and fight cancer. In fact, oranges have been discovered to contain more than 170 unique phytonutrients, including 30 nutrients which are carotenoids. Compounds of the carotenoid family have been found to combat cancer and other typical illnesses. It turns out that oranges contain some of the highest amounts of carotenoids.
Oranges also contain substances called limonoids. Limonoids are the substances that have been found to give oranges and related fruits their tangy flavor. Limonoids are believed to have anticancer properties; oranges contain a great amount of limonoids.
Why a healthful diet?
A lot of people try to eat a bad diet and then take supplements, like vitamin C pills, to make up the difference. The truth is that you can't really get the same effect as when you actually eat the foods high in vitamin C as part of a healthful diet. This is because oranges don't just contain vitamin C and contain numerous other nutritional substances as well. It is virtually impossible to get all of the nutritional substances in oranges into a vitamin C supplement or other vitamin pill. It makes sense then that you should try to get your citrus supplement in the form of the actual fruit as a part of an overall healthy diet. Oranges don't cost much, taste great and should be considered a valuable part of your diet.--

TASTE NEWS-Save Your Health with Turmeric

Turmeric, a spice used to flavor traditional Indian dishes, is emerging as
a powerful weapon against disease. The active compound in turmeric is
curcumin, a potent anti-inflammatory that gives the spice its bright yellow
color. Although it has been used for centuries in the folk medicine of
different cultures, modern medicine is showing that it is effective against a
number of chronic diseases, including Alzheimer's and several types of cancer.

Turmeric's amazing benefits include fighting the following conditions:

Alzheimer's.
A study at the University of California, Los Angeles, found curcumin may
treat Alzheimer's by slowing the build-up of amyloid plaques — one of the
hallmarks of Alzheimer's — in the brain, and a laboratory study at the
University of Illinois revealed that curcumin protected cells from damage caused
by beta-amyloid.

Cirrhosis of the liver.
Austrian researchers treated mice with chronic liver inflammation, the
condition that causes damaging and scarring of liver cells. Research
published in the journal Gut revealed that curcumin appeared to delay the liver
damage that causes cirrhosis. The curcumin reduced the blockage of bile ducts
and slowed liver damage and scarring.

Pancreatic cancer.
A Phase II clinical trial at MD Anderson Center involved 25 patients with
pancreatic cancer who were given 8 grams of turmeric a day for two months.
Tumor growth stopped in two patients, one for eight months and another for
two-and-a-half years. Another patient's tumor temporarily regressed by 73
percent. Since the only two drugs approved by the FDA are effective in no
more than 10 percent of patients, turmeric's effectiveness was similar, and
with no side effects.

In another study, turmeric reduced tumor growth in mice with pancreatic
cancer by 43 percent. When combined with fish oil, which helps the body
absorb turmeric, tumor growth was reduced by 70 percent.

Parkinson's.
Researchers at Johns Hopkins University Medical School showed that
curcumin protected against the nerve cell damage associated with Parkinson’s.
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center website, the suggested
adult dosage of curcumin is 400 to 600 mg of the standardized powder three
times a day.

Breast cancer.
A study at the University of Missouri found that curcumin, the active
ingredient in turmeric, decreased the incidence of progestin-accelerated breast
tumors in animals. It also delayed onset of the disease and reduced the
incidence of multiple tumors. Another animal study published in the journal
Clinical Cancer Research found that curcumin appeared to shut down a protein
that helps breast cancer metastasize and spread to the lungs.

Colon cancer.
Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, which is a staple of Indian
cuisine, is believed to account for the significantly lower incidence of
colon cancer within the Indian population. Researchers at the University of
Texas Medical Branch at Galveston found that curcumin blocked the activity of
a gastrointestinal hormone that spurs the development of colon cancer.
"Our findings suggest that curcumin may be useful for colon cancer treatment,
as well as potential colon cancer suppression," said Dr. B. Mark Evers,
formerly of the University of Texas and currently at the University of
Kentucky College of Medicine.

Pain.
Studies show that turmeric reduces inflammation as powerfully as the
prescription drug phenylbutazone (Butazolidine). "It works really well," Dr.
Tanya Edwards, M.D., medical director of the Center for Integrative Medicine
at the Cleveland Clinic, told WebMD. "I’ve had patients with arthritis who
start using turmeric and are able to go off their NSAIDs entirely."

Arthritis/Gout.
Italian researchers found that supplementing regular arthritis medication
with a turmeric-based compound decreased pain and stiffness by 58 percent.
Dr. Ray Sahelian, author of "Mind Boosters," recommends a 300 mg capsule of
this natural inflammatory herb three times daily to reduce the swelling
and pain of gout. A study at the University of Arizona College of Medicine
found that curcumin stopped the onset of rheumatoid arthritis in mice.

Multiple sclerosis.
Researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center injected curcurmin
into rats that were specially created to develop MS, and their symptoms
vanished. In the same experiment, mice with MS that didn't have the curcumin
injections developed severe paralysis. In human terms, the amount of curcumin
given to the mice was roughly equal to the amount found in a regular Indian
diet.

Although safe, curcumin can interfere with some drugs, including those
that thin the blood, so consult with your physician before taking this or any
other supplement.

TASTE NEWS-THE SEVEN C's OF SUCCESS

THE SEVEN C’s OF SUCCESS by Brian Tracy

Clarity:
Eighty percent of success comes from being clear on who you are, what you believe in and what you want.
Competence:
You can't climb to the next rung on the ladder until you are excellent at what you do now.
Constraints:
Eighty percent of all obstacles to success come from within. Find out what is constraining in you or your company and deal with it.
Concentration:
The ability to focus on one thing single-mindedly and see it through until it's done takes more character than anything else.
Creativity:
Flood your life with ideas from many sources. Creativity needs to be exercised like a muscle; if you don't use it you'll lose it.
Courage:
Most in demand and least in supply, courage is the willingness to do the things you know are right.
Continuous learning:
Read, at the very least, one book a week on business to keep you miles ahead of the competition. And just as you eat and bathe, organize your time so you spend 30 minutes a day exploring email, sending messages, going through websites, because like exercise, it's the only way you can keep on top of technology. If you get away from it, you'll lose your edge.

TASTE NEWS-NEW DANGEROUS LAW IN DUBAI

BEST OF ALL AVOID TRAVELING VIA DUBAI
Subject: Pls see below on Dubai laws and take extreme care..

URGENT: A very very serious warning ..travelling to UAE & Other Gulf Countries...regarding Khas Khas, also known as poppy seeds
Dear Friends,

Yesterday only I came to know of a case from a friend of mine which is very scary. One of his friends was traveling to UK via Dubai. Unfortunately he was carrying a packet of Khas Khas which is a commonly used spice in some Indian curries and sweets. Khas Khas is also known as poppy seed which can be sprouted to grow narcotics (afeem etc.).

This innocent person did not know that recently the laws in UAE and other Gulf countries have been revised and
carrying Khas Khas is punishable with minimum 20 years of imprisonment or even worse with death penalty. Currently, the person is in a jail in Dubai for the last two weeks. His friends are frantically trying hard for his release but are finding that this has become a very very serious case. Lawyers are asking huge fees amounting to AED 100,000 even to appear in the court to plead for his innocence.

Please forward this email to all you know specially in India. They should know the seriousness of this matter and should never ever carry even minutest quantities of the following items when traveling to Gulf countries:

1. Khas Khas whether raw, roasted or cooked.
2. Paan
3. Betel nut (supari and its products, e.g. Paan Parag etc.)

The penalties are very severe and it could destroy the life of an innocent person.
Detailed Analysis
This warning is valid and should certainly be taken seriously. The UAE does have extremely strict anti-drug laws and a number of people have been jailed there for possession of substances, including poppy seed, that would be considered entirely innocent in other jurisdictions. Information for air travellers on the Government of Dubai website notes:
It is prohibited to bring certain items into Dubai and passengers should be sure not to bring any of these items with them, either intentionally or accidentally. It goes without saying that all kinds of narcotic drugs, including cocaine, heroin, cannabis, opiates and any derivatives are prohibited, and should any visitor be caught with such substances, they face stiff punishment that will almost always involve lengthy jail time. The following substances are also banned: poppy seeds (even in bakery products), qat leaf, betel leaf or nuts, niswar and gutkha.
It is certainly true that people have been put in prison in the UAE for having even tiny amounts of prohibited substances. A February 2008 BBC article reports that "a Swiss national is serving a four-year jail term after three poppy seeds from a bread roll he ate at Heathrow airport were found on his clothes". And an earlier news articlereports the case of an Indian man who received a ten year sentence for carrying poppy seed in the form of khas khas (khus khus):
Khus-khus is a spice that forms an important part of many curries, biryanis and kormas in India. It is available at your friendly neighbourhood grocery.

But khus-khus seeds have landed Mohammed Abdul Kaleem Bahadur, an Indian commercial artist, in jail for 10 years, and cost him a fine of Dirhams 50,000 (INR 600,000 approx) and deportation.

Bahadur was arrested on August 8, 1996, and was convicted by the Sharia Criminal Court on September 30, 1997. His appeal was rejected in October 1998.

Recently, the Federal High Court, the UAE's highest judicial body, rejected his final appeal and confirmed his sentence.
Carrying products containing betel or qat leaf can also land travellers in serious legal trouble that may result in long prison terms. In fact, even being found with certain over-the-counter or prescription medications in the UAE could have very series legal ramifications. The Government of Dubai website states:
Certain over-the-counter and prescription medications that are available in your home country may fall on to the prohibited items list in Dubai. Check the list of prohibited medicines carefully, and avoid bringing these medicines with you. If medical necessity requires you to take such medications, please ensure that you have a medical certificate from a UAE-licensed practitioner, or a medical prescription and a detailed doctor’s report from your doctor in your home country. Even with such documents, you are not permitted to carry more than a three-month supply at any time.
This warning message may be a little inaccurate in that it suggests that the minimum sentence for carrying poppy seed in the UAE is twenty years imprisonment. In fact, people caught with poppy seed have generally received lesser sentences than twenty years, so the suggested minimum sentence is not accurate in all cases. Penalties for the possession of illegal drugs in the UAE can include the death sentence, but I am unaware of any cases in which the death sentence was applied for possession of poppy seed in the form of khas khas. And, since the warning does not provide a name for the person carrying the khas khas or a date when the man was detained, it is difficult to ascertain if the message describes a real case.

That said, this warning is certainly worth heeding. Travellers to the UAE should certainly ensure that they are not carrying any items or substances that are prohibited in that country. In fact, an understanding of local laws should be an essential part of trip planning for those looking to visit not only the UAE and other Gulf regions, but any foreign country. However draconian or unfair a law may seem to the visitor, ignorance of the law is no excuse.
